To develop the passion for letter writing among the youth, the Philippine Postal Corp. (PHLPost) will hold a simultaneous 5th National Letter Writing Day (NLWD) in connection with the worldwide celebration of World Post Day to be held at SM Skydome -North Edsa in Quezon City, and other SM Supermalls branches on October 09.

Selected schools in Metro Manila and the provinces will participate in letter writing activities at SM Mall branches in Cabanatuan, Tarlac, North Edsa Skydome, San Pablo City, Seaside Cebu, Iloilo, Davao and Cagayan De Oro City. 

The event encourages young people to speak their minds, using their imagination and views on the world to envision a positive change in the form of a letter.

PHLPost hopes that the event will be a perfect venue for students to sharpen their skills in composition and find the perfect participant to represent the country in the international letter writing stage which will be held at Universal Postal Union (UPU) headquarters in Berne, Switzerland.

The theme for this year’s Universal Postal Union 46th International Letter Writing Contest is: "Imagine you are an advisor to the new UN Secretary-General which world issue would you help him tackle first and how would you advise him to solve it?"

The topic was chosen to celebrate the election of the new UN Secretary-General, António Guterreswho took his oath of office recently. He is a Portuguese politician and diplomat who is serving as the ninth Secretary-General of the United Nations.

About 150 countries will simultaneously commemorate World Post Day (WPD) on October 09 with activities promoting letter writing and stamp collecting to students as well as new postal services at this special day.
 

Unfazed by the advent of technology, PHLPost has come up with an innovative idea to bnng letter writing in shopping malls where students can converge and express their thoughts and ideas through the art of letter writing.

In support of the Universal Postal Union’s (UPU) 46th International Letter-Writing Competition for Young People, the Philippine Postal Corporation (PHLPost) will also host a letter-writing contest in the Philippines.

The PHLPost is encouraging all public and private elementary- and high-school students ages 15 and below from all over the country to participate and submit a letter adhering to the theme “Imagine you are an advisor to the new UN Secretary-General; which issue would you help him tackle first and how would you advise him to solve it?” The letter must not exceed the 1,000-word limit, must be original, unpublished, and must contain the basic elements of a letter—heading, salutation, body of the letter, complimentary close and signature.

On a separate sheet of paper, the participant must indicate the number of words of the letter, complete name, home address, gender of candidate, age, date of birth, name of school, school address, grade or year level, contact number and school contact number (landline, fax, cellphone number). Participants should also attach a colored solo picture of himself or herself for identification.

The entries must be placed in a brown envelope and may only be submitted through Domestic Express Mail Service or Registered Mail. Entries submitted directly or sent through any other couriers shall automatically be disqualified. All entries must be sent through the Post Office and must be addressed to:

PHLPost is accepting entries until March 31. PRESS RELEASE: 8th grader won PHLPost National Letter Writing tilt

With almost 3,000 entries, Grade 8 student from San Francisco High School in Quezon City, Erica Angeli Seno won the grand prize in the National Letter Writing Competion of the Philippine Postal Corporation (PHLPost) held during the World Post Day celebration in SM Supermalls nationwide.

The 4th Simultaneous National Letter-writing Day activity was done in partnership with SM Supermalls and Department of Education and was participated by Grade 7 to Grade 9 students from all over the country.

The participants were asked to write a 1,000-word, original and unpublished letter adhering to the theme “Sulat ng Bayani sa Henerasyon Ngayon”, or what Filipino heroes would want to tell the youth of today.
Seno, 13, wrote in her letter under the pen name of Dr. Jose Rizal. She encourages the youth to stand for what is right and start the change that they wanted from themselves.

“Kung wala kang ginagawang pagkilos, walang pagbabagong maisasagawa at walang hakbang na makakapagdulot ng bunggang ninanais” an exceprt from her letter.

Seno will take home P10,000 and a certificate, while Angel Joy B. Abad, student of Ateneo de Davao University from Eastern Mindanao, bagged the second prize and will take home P7,000 and a certificate. And third place, Jaira Patricia V. Ebron College of Immaculate Concepcion from Cabanatuan City will bring home P5,000 along with a certificate.

Participating Malls were SM City Cabanatuan, SM City Tarlac, SM City North Edsa, SM City San Pablo, SM City Seaside Cebu, SM City Iloilo, SM City Davao and SM City Cagayan De Oro. PHLPost Area 9 held their activity in Zamboanga City National High School.

Meanwhile, the Universal Postal Union (UPU) is has launched its 46th International Letter-Writing Competition for Young People. In support of UPU’s annual letter-writing contest, PHLPost is encouraging all public and private elementary- and high-school students, 15 years old and below, to express their creativity in writing letters. The Philippine Postal Corporation (PHLPost) will hold a simultaneous nationwide letter writing campaign focusing on the theme “Sulat ng Bayani sa Henerasyon Ngayon” - to be participated by about 2,000 students in celebration of “World Post Day” on October 07 at 8:30 AM to be held at SM North EDSA Main Building, Cinema 10 and at selected SM Supermall branches all over the country.

The 4th Simultaneous National Letter-writing Day activity will be undertaken in partnership with SM Supermalls and Department of Education. Participating Malls are SM City Cabanatuan, SM City Tarlac, SM City North Edsa, SM City San Pablo, SM City Seaside Cebu, SM City Iloilo, SM City Davao, SM City Cagayan De Oro. The NLWD is a national event coinciding with the worldwide celebration of World Post Day. It is celebrated every 9th of October annually, to commemorate the establishment of the Universal Postal Union (UPU) in 1874 in the Swiss capital of Berne. Its main purpose is to create awareness of the role of the postal sector in people’s and businesses’ everyday lives and its contribution to the social and economic development of countries.

The Philippines, being an active UPU member, are encouraged to organize their own national activities to celebrate the event, including everything from the introduction or promotion of new postal products and services, to the organization of exhibits and letter writing activities at post offices and mail centers.

Students who will participate in the simultaneous letter writing competition will be asked to write based on the theme of the contest. “We wanted to build and nurture a sense of social commitment, nationalism and love for country. Our heroes were willing to risk their lives to help other people”, Assistant Postmaster General Luis D. Carlos said.

Together with thousands of participating youth, PHLPost further hopes that the activity will provide them the venue to learn the ideals and recommendations embodied in their letters.

The postal service would like to encourage the youth to express his or her thoughts and hopes through letter writing.

PHLPost will gather all the letters made by the participating students for a chance to win P10,000 for the first prize, P7,000 – second prize and P3,000 – third prize.

The Philippine Postal Corporation (PHLPost) has announced the winner who will represent the Philippines in this year’s 45th International Letter Writing Competition organized by the Universal Postal Union in Berne, Switzerland.

The winning letter of Joel Andrew V. Mallari, a student at the Philippine Science High School, Central Luzon Campus in Pampanga top the almost 1,000 entries sent all over the country for the Letter Writing Contest organized by PHLPost in the national level.

He will also received P20,000 cash prize, a certificate of recognition and presentation stamps frame from PHLPost. Mallari’s winning school will also get P10,000.

PHLPost hope that the entry of Mallari will surpass the bronze medal that Ashley Nicole Abalos of PAREF-Woodrose School in Muntinlupa City won in the 2014 edition of the International Letter-Writing Competition for Young People also in Switzerland.

An estimated 1.5 million young people all over the world are expected to participate in this year’s international contest.

The competition was created by the UPU 1969 Tokyo Congress and officially launched in 1971. The Universal Postal Union, in which the Philippines is an active member, establishes a theme annually, with participating countries choosing an entry for the UPU international competition.

This year’s nationwide contest focuses on the international theme: “Write a letter to your 45 year old self”.

Likewise, the second and third prize went to Patricia Angelica P. Tan of Chiang Kai Shek College, Manila and Franz Aidyl Gabriel G. Suico of University of Cebu respectively. They will also received cash prizes, certificate of recognition, presentation of stamps frame and cash prizes for the winning schools.

The Philippine Postal Corporation (PHLPost) invites students 15-years old and below to join the 45th Universal Postal Union (UPU) International Letter Writing Competition for Young People.

To select the country’s official entry to the international competition, PHLPost has organized a nationwide letter writing contest inviting young people to focus on the theme” “Write a letter to your 45 year old self”. Children around the world are encouraged to take a flight - into their imagination, while writing a letter to themselves in the future. The competition also coincides with the 45th edition of the international contest.

The national winner will be sent by PHLPost as the Philippines’ official entry in the worldwide letter writing contest organized by the UPU International Bureau. The top winner will receive a gold medal and a certificate, as well as other prizes to commemorate their win. The gold medalist will also be offered a trip to the UPU headquarters in Berne, Switzerland.

Entries for the national competition must be recent and original letters written in English according to the theme of the competition. It must not exceed the limit of 1000 words in length. The composition must contain the elements of a letter, place and date, addressee’s address, opening and closing salutation and signature.

On a separate sheet of paper, the participant must indicate the following information: Number of words of the letter, complete name and address, Gender of Candidate, Age and /or Date of Birth, Colored 2×2 Photo, Name and Address of School/Grade or Year Level and Contact Numbers (Telephone/Cellphone Number).

The first prize winner will receive P20,000.00 cash; second prize- P15,000.00 and third prize- P10,000.00. All winners will also be awarded medals, plaques and albums of Philippine stamps. The top three winning school will also received cash prizes and a plaque from PHLPost.

The criteria for judging are structure as a letter -20%; adherence to the theme- 30%; creativity -30%; and Use of language-20%.

Ateneo Stamp Club

With nothing to lose, I organized the Ateneo Stamp Club for school year 1982-83 at the Ateneo de Davao University's high school department.

Our organizational meeting was held in June, and by the time of our first regular meeting on July 2 there were 32 members. Officers were elected, and as the student moderator of the club I appointed one of the members as club artist (he did the preliminary design above for our t-shirts).

During the school fiesta held on December 5-7, 1982, we were assigned a classroom for an Open House Exhibit, but on the first day of the event it was clear that we lacked materials for the exhibit, particularly stands for the frames of stamps, so the planned show had to be closed.

About the only other activity of the club was to encourage members and entire student body to join the 2nd Asean Letter-Writing Contest. A poster for the rules of this contest was pinned on the school's bulletin board for all to see.

Seventeen of the ASC members became student-members of the Davao Stamp Collectors.

St. Stephen's

A stamp exhibit in conjunction with National Stamp Collecting Month was held last November 9 to 13 at the St. Stephen's High School in Manila.

This was organized by the Philippine Philatelic Federation and the Philippine Postal Corporation, with federation president Dr. Rey Ong de Jesus and Mr. Hans Becker of the International Philippine Philatelic Society leading the philatelists.

Oro Philatelic Club 2nd exhibit

This slogan cancellation for the 2nd Philatelic Exhibition of the Oro Philatelic Club held at Ateneo de Cagayan from December 8 to 9, 1956, was used only in Cagayan de Oro City.

Ateneo de Cagayan now is more popularly known by its university name, Xavier University. The name change happened in 1958.

Stamp Clubs News

Early 1982 saw the birth of a new club publication, IPPS NEWS, of the International Philippine Philatelic Society....According to Compiler/Editor Linda Stanfield, this mimeographed quarterly does not replace the club's Philippine Philatelic News, the highly respected publication for studies and researches on all periods and aspects of Philippine philately.
     The IPPS NEWS is the brainchild of the club's President, Eugene A. Garrett....It will become "a venue for discussing club activities, for club news, for questions and answers, etc...." The 10 pages of the maiden issue certainly do all these and more. Its front page carries a facsimile of a cacheted cover for the Concert at the Park 200 issue -- with an actual stamp and first day cancellation!
     To all IPPS members all over the world, the new club publication is certainly a welcome treat. In the words of Ms. Stanfield, "This is going to be our medium of keeping in touch with one another and opening a line of communications among ourselves."

A new stamp club, the Davao Stamp Collectors, was formally organized on Feb. 14 with 20 members attending its organizational meeting. Elected officers of the DSC are Atty. Virginia H. Europa, President; Mrs. Fe Geonson, Secretary; Miss Jojie Antonio, Treasurer; and Dr. Cesar Somoso, PRO. Atty. Rodolfo Sarenas, former mayor of Davao City (1944-45) [he was the mayor from 1953-54; Juan Sarenas was mayor from 1943-44 --O.], is the Club Adviser.
     Regular club meetings will be held on the first Sunday of every quarter with committee meetings, get-togethers and conferences in-between. Temporary DSC headquarters is the EDI Law Office with Ms. Alma Grado as acting Office Manager. The club President may be contacted at the City Court....
     Davao Stamp Collectors is inviting all stamp collectors in the area to join its membership rolls.

The Board of Directors of the Philippine Philatelic Auction Club has elected its set of Officers for 1982: President, Don Carlos Inductivo; Vice President, Ms. Naty G. Lozano; Secretary, Ms. Josefina T. Cura; Treasurer, Mr. Felipe Liao. The club's headquarters remain at Rm. 223, Madrigal Bldg., Escolta, Manila.

March 12 saw the organization of the Bacolod City Philatelic Club. Its Officers are Mr. Jun Pefianco...,President; Ms. Suzette Muñozca, Vice President; Ms. Cloty L. Alcala, Secretary; Mrs. Carmela Namin, Treasurer; Dra. Fe Montinola, PRO. Facilitator in the organization of the club was Ms. Naty G. Lozano, VP of the Philippine Philatelic Auction Club who was in Bacolod for the La Salle Stamp Exhibit and for holidays with relatives and friends.
     Some 20 members attended the organizational meeting of the BCPC and a second meeting was scheduled for the end of the month. All stamp collectors in Bacolod and the rest of Negros Occidental are encouraged to join the club.

The Grade School Stamp Club of La Salle College, Bacolod City, held a very successful competitive stamp exhibition in the school library last March 4-5. The affair was graced by the presence of Postmaster General J. Roilo Golez, Stamp and Philatelic Section Chief Ben Moncayo, Stamp Designer Antonio Chuidian and Mrs. Adelina Argente, senior officer of the Stamp and Philatelic Section.
     According to Bro. Jaime Dalumpines, FSC, exhibition coordinator, the Bureau of Posts and some Manila philatelists also sent over some materials for exhibition. The affair was given much publicity on TV and radio all over the province.

Over at Alabang in south Metro-Manila, the Philatelic Club of the de la Salle Zobel School also held a Philatelic Exhibition at the school auditorium from March 3 to 5. The grade school affair had formal ribbon-cutting ceremonies attended by school officials led by Bro. Raymond Bronowics, FSC, Director.
     President of the school's stamp club is Maximilian Fernandez. Moderators are Miss Gloria Pante and Mrs. Antonita Jose.

Stamp Clubs News

The Stamp Club of de la Salle University Grade School, Manila, is busy preparing for a competitive exhibition to open on Feb. 23.             According to club moderator Rene Aquino, there will be two categories: one for members in Grades 3, 4 & 5, and another for those in Grades 6 and 7.
      Each participant is limited to one frame of 6 quadrille pages. There will be 3 prizes for each category plus a Grand Award and a special trophy for the best RP entry.

Due to registration requirements, the new stamp club announced here earlier [Philippine Stamp Club] will be officially called "Philippine Stamp Collectors" (PSC). It remains a club "for stamp collectors who cannot attend club meetings but want to enjoy all the benefits of a stamp club."
      Formal launching date is Jan. 31, 1981 with Spenders Philippine Stamps as sponsor. Membership fee is P25 per annum....

The Philippine Philatelic Auction Club organized an Educational Committee under Naty "Mommy" Lozano and Josie T. Cura to promote philately among beginners of all ages. A series of lectures on the basics of philately has been scheduled.
      The first meeting was held last Jan. 25 with over 50 guests attending. Speaker was PPAC founder Severino N. Luna. Next meeting will be on March 15 with Atty. Epi Paras as lecturer....

Stamp Clubs News

According to Rene Aquino, moderator of the de la Salle (Taft) Grade School Stamp Club, his boys are already preparing for an exhibit scheduled for February 1981. The club counts over a hundred members and meets twice a week.

Down in Alabang, the de la Salle South Grade School has also organized a stamp club with some 50 boys and girls as its first members. The moderator is Miss Gloria Pante. Last Oct. 23 and 24, she led her members in viewing the UN Photo-Philatelic Exhibit at the Bureau of Posts.

In Iloilo, the Central Philippine University stamp club had the philatelic limelight from Nov. 17 to 23. It was the CPU's 75th anniversary and the Bureau of Posts marked the event with a set of stamps -- with first day of issue simultaneously in Iloilo and Manila
          For its part, the CPU stamp club held a non-competitive stamp exhibit -- one of those rare philatelic events outside Metro Manila. This was organized in cooperation with the Stamp & Philatelic Section which sent a whole delegation to Iloilo. It was headed by the Philatelic Chief himself, Mr. Ben Moncayo.

The CMLI Philatelic and Numismatic Club had an afternoon auction last Nov. 9. Although attendance was lower than expected because it coincided with the NCEE, the bids were enthusiastic according to auctioneer Boy Inductivo.
          The club will hold another auction during its Christmas Party on the afternoon of Dec. 21. According to Ruby Peria, club PRO, prospective members may come to the party.

The APO Philatelic Society formally opened its 30th Philatelic Exhibition (APOPEX) last Nov. 21. Apparently, this was not a competitive exhibit since the names of all exhibitors were displayed along with their entries. Among them were Joel Salazar, Dennis Maturan and APO Prexy Ben Aromin.
          An APO Grand Auction was also held last Nov. 30 with Tony Mendoza heading the committee and Mr. Salazar as auctioneer. For its holiday celebration, the APO has scheduled a "Fellowship Luncheon" at the Tradewinds Hotel for Dec. 6.

The Philippine Philatelic Auction Club will hold its Christmas Party on Dec. 14 at the Army & Navy Club by the Luneta. As always, an auction full of choice local and foreign materials will follow the luncheon. The next PPAC auction after this will be on the last Sunday of February.

DAVPEX '87

Souvenirs of DAVPEX '87.

Got these during a visit to Davao City in 1987 -- too late, unfortunately.

Had I been around that time the souvenir folder would have contained the Davao City commemorative stamp postmarked on its first day of issue. As it is there is no stamp -- just a souvenir.

Interestingly, it appears to me the Davao Stamp Collectors changed its name to Davao Philatelic Club.

The UM of UM Philatelic Club stands for the University of Mindanao.

DECS memo

Signed by Secretary Lourdes R. Quisumbing of the then Department of Education, Culture and Sports on April 30, 1987, DECS Memorandum No. 92, series of 1987, called for the "organization of philatelic (stamp collection) clubs."

It states the following points:

"1. The Philippine Philatelic Club wishes to invite school officials to organize stamp collection clubs in their respective schools. Philately or stamp collection can be regarded as a wholesome and enjoyable hobby for our students and pupils.

"2. The Philippine Philatelic Club conducts lectures on philately and can assist the advisers in organizing stamp clubs in their schools for free. Schools are therefore encouraged to organize stamp collection clubs among the students and pupils. Stamp advisers can write to [postal address of PPC] for free information materials."

This was addressed to bureau directors, regional directors, schools superintendents, presidents of state colleges and universities, heads of private schools and colleges and universities, and administrators of vocational/technical schools.
