Today, October 9, the Philippine Postal Corporation (PHLPost) will celebrate World Post Day by encouraging the students to write letters to their beloved teachers.

Schools nationwide will take part in the nationwide “Salamat Po (Thank you) Teacher” raffle promo and competition.  The goal is to “effectively promote the value of gratitude to teachers who have done most, apart from their parents in shaping their future to become better persons in society.

World Post Day was declared by the 1969 Universal Postal Congress in Tokyo as a means to mark the anniversary of the Universal Postal Union’s (UPU) creation in 1874.

The purpose of World Post Day is to bring awareness to the postal service’s role in  everyday lives of people and businesses, as well as its contribution to global social and economic development. PHLPost is an active member of the Universal Postal Union (UPU), a specialized agency of the United Nations who has a membership of about 192 postal administrations in countries worldwide.

The postal service is inviting elementary, junior and senior high school students to write and mail letters of gratitude.

Those who are interested to join will just have to write a “Thank You” letter to their teachers. These letters must be sealed in an envelope where the complete details of the sender and addressee are clearly written and visible.

The “thank you” letters should be mailed via the Post Office through the Ordinary Mail Service, using the theme: “4A’s of Gratitude: Appreciation, Admiration, Approval, and Attention.” Awards and cash prizes await the raffle and competition winners.

Aside from the raffle draw, students will have the chance to participate in the regional and national letter writing competition. The winner in the national competition will also represent the Philippines in the Universal Postal Union (UPU) Letter Writing Contest in Berne, Switzerland to compete from among the 192 countries who are also members of the UPU.

PHLPost is pleased to announce the 27 chosen students from nine Postal Areas during the Area Level Letter Writing Contest held during the National Letter Writing Day on October 9. They will be once again be competing, this time on a National Level, wherein the winner will represent the Philippines to the UPU International Letter Writing for Young People Contest in April 2018.

For the Area Level, the students were asked to write a letter under the theme “Imagine you are an advisor to the new United Nations Secretary-General; which world issue would you help him tackle first and how would you advise him to solve it?”

This time, for the National Level, the students will write their letter under the theme given by the Universal Postal Union (UPU), “Imagine you are a letter travelling through time. What message do you wish to convey to your readers?” Deadline of submission of entries at PHLPost Area Administrative Offices in on or before January 10, 2018.

To develop the passion for letter writing among the youth, the Philippine Postal Corp. (PHLPost) will hold a simultaneous 5th National Letter Writing Day (NLWD) in connection with the worldwide celebration of World Post Day to be held at SM Skydome -North Edsa in Quezon City, and other SM Supermalls branches on October 09.

Selected schools in Metro Manila and the provinces will participate in letter writing activities at SM Mall branches in Cabanatuan, Tarlac, North Edsa Skydome, San Pablo City, Seaside Cebu, Iloilo, Davao and Cagayan De Oro City. 

The event encourages young people to speak their minds, using their imagination and views on the world to envision a positive change in the form of a letter.

PHLPost hopes that the event will be a perfect venue for students to sharpen their skills in composition and find the perfect participant to represent the country in the international letter writing stage which will be held at Universal Postal Union (UPU) headquarters in Berne, Switzerland.

The theme for this year’s Universal Postal Union 46th International Letter Writing Contest is: "Imagine you are an advisor to the new UN Secretary-General which world issue would you help him tackle first and how would you advise him to solve it?"

The topic was chosen to celebrate the election of the new UN Secretary-General, António Guterreswho took his oath of office recently. He is a Portuguese politician and diplomat who is serving as the ninth Secretary-General of the United Nations.

About 150 countries will simultaneously commemorate World Post Day (WPD) on October 09 with activities promoting letter writing and stamp collecting to students as well as new postal services at this special day.

PRESS RELEASE: PHLPost young letter writer competes in Switzerland

The Philippine Postal Corporation (PHLPost) has announced the winner who will represent the Philippines in this year’s 46th International Letter Writing Competition organized by the Universal Postal Union (UPU) in Berne, Switzerland.

Giselle Coron, Communication and Events Programme Director of the International Bureau of the UPU formally accepted the entry of Clarence Christian Chua, a 13 years old student at the Grace Christian College, Quezon City.

Mr. Chua bested 71 other young letter writers all over the country in a local contest organized by PHLPost nationwide to select the best entry to the international competition. Chua received P5,000 and a certificate of recognition, while his school received a PHLPost Philatelic Presentation frame.

This year’s nationwide contest focuses on the international theme: “Imagine you are an advisor to the new UN Secretary-General; which issue would you help him tackle first and how would you advise him to solve it?"

In his opening letter, Mr. Chua said, “I used to hear these words from my mother “Finish your food.“ Out of curiosity, he asked, why”” his mother replied, “Because there are street children out there who have nothing to eat. “ He obediently finished his food, not sparing a grain of rice on the plate. From that day on, He realized the reality of a hungry world and the growing problem of food insecurity in our world today.”

An estimated 1.5 million young people all over the world are expected to participate in this year’s international contest.

The competition was created by the UPU in 1969 Tokyo Congress and officially launched in 1971. The Universal Postal Union, in which the Philippines is an active member, establishes a theme annually, with participating countries choosing an entry for the UPU international competition.

PHLPost hope that the entry of Chua will surpass the bronze medal that Ashley Nicole Abalos of PAREF-Woodrose School in Muntinlupa City won in the 2014 edition of the International Letter-Writing Competition for Young People also in Switzerland.

In support of the Universal Postal Union’s (UPU) 46th International Letter-Writing Competition for Young People, the Philippine Postal Corporation (PHLPost) will also host a letter-writing contest in the Philippines.

The PHLPost is encouraging all public and private elementary- and high-school students ages 15 and below from all over the country to participate and submit a letter adhering to the theme “Imagine you are an advisor to the new UN Secretary-General; which issue would you help him tackle first and how would you advise him to solve it?” The letter must not exceed the 1,000-word limit, must be original, unpublished, and must contain the basic elements of a letter—heading, salutation, body of the letter, complimentary close and signature.

On a separate sheet of paper, the participant must indicate the number of words of the letter, complete name, home address, gender of candidate, age, date of birth, name of school, school address, grade or year level, contact number and school contact number (landline, fax, cellphone number). Participants should also attach a colored solo picture of himself or herself for identification.

The entries must be placed in a brown envelope and may only be submitted through Domestic Express Mail Service or Registered Mail. Entries submitted directly or sent through any other couriers shall automatically be disqualified. All entries must be sent through the Post Office and must be addressed to:

PHLPost is accepting entries until March 31. With almost 3,000 entries, Grade 8 student from San Francisco High School in Quezon City, Erica Angeli Seno won the grand prize in the National Letter Writing Competion of the Philippine Postal Corporation (PHLPost) held during the World Post Day celebration in SM Supermalls nationwide.

The 4th Simultaneous National Letter-writing Day activity was done in partnership with SM Supermalls and Department of Education and was participated by Grade 7 to Grade 9 students from all over the country.

The participants were asked to write a 1,000-word, original and unpublished letter adhering to the theme “Sulat ng Bayani sa Henerasyon Ngayon”, or what Filipino heroes would want to tell the youth of today.
Seno, 13, wrote in her letter under the pen name of Dr. Jose Rizal. She encourages the youth to stand for what is right and start the change that they wanted from themselves.

“Kung wala kang ginagawang pagkilos, walang pagbabagong maisasagawa at walang hakbang na makakapagdulot ng bunggang ninanais” an exceprt from her letter.

Seno will take home P10,000 and a certificate, while Angel Joy B. Abad, student of Ateneo de Davao University from Eastern Mindanao, bagged the second prize and will take home P7,000 and a certificate. And third place, Jaira Patricia V. Ebron College of Immaculate Concepcion from Cabanatuan City will bring home P5,000 along with a certificate.

Participating Malls were SM City Cabanatuan, SM City Tarlac, SM City North Edsa, SM City San Pablo, SM City Seaside Cebu, SM City Iloilo, SM City Davao and SM City Cagayan De Oro. PHLPost Area 9 held their activity in Zamboanga City National High School.

Meanwhile, the Universal Postal Union (UPU) is has launched its 46th International Letter-Writing Competition for Young People. In support of UPU’s annual letter-writing contest, PHLPost is encouraging all public and private elementary- and high-school students, 15 years old and below, to express their creativity in writing letters. The letter entries should be about the theme “Imagine you are an advisor to the new UN Secretary General; which world issue would you help him tackle first and how would you advise him to solve it?”

The Philippine Postal Corporation (PHLPost) will hold a simultaneous nationwide letter writing campaign focusing on the theme “Sulat ng Bayani sa Henerasyon Ngayon” - to be participated by about 2,000 students in celebration of “World Post Day” on October 07 at 8:30 AM to be held at SM North EDSA Main Building, Cinema 10 and at selected SM Supermall branches all over the country.

The 4th Simultaneous National Letter-writing Day activity will be undertaken in partnership with SM Supermalls and Department of Education. Participating Malls are SM City Cabanatuan, SM City Tarlac, SM City North Edsa, SM City San Pablo, SM City Seaside Cebu, SM City Iloilo, SM City Davao, SM City Cagayan De Oro. PHLPost Area 9 will hold their activity in Zamboanga City National High School.

The NLWD is a national event coinciding with the worldwide celebration of World Post Day. It is celebrated every 9th of October annually, to commemorate the establishment of the Universal Postal Union (UPU) in 1874 in the Swiss capital of Berne. Its main purpose is to create awareness of the role of the postal sector in people’s and businesses’ everyday lives and its contribution to the social and economic development of countries.

The Philippines, being an active UPU member, are encouraged to organize their own national activities to celebrate the event, including everything from the introduction or promotion of new postal products and services, to the organization of exhibits and letter writing activities at post offices and mail centers.

Students who will participate in the simultaneous letter writing competition will be asked to write based on the theme of the contest. “We wanted to build and nurture a sense of social commitment, nationalism and love for country. Our heroes were willing to risk their lives to help other people”, Assistant Postmaster General Luis D. Carlos said.

Together with thousands of participating youth, PHLPost further hopes that the activity will provide them the venue to learn the ideals and recommendations embodied in their letters.

The postal service would like to encourage the youth to express his or her thoughts and hopes through letter writing.

PHLPost will gather all the letters made by the participating students for a chance to win P10,000 for the first prize, P7,000 – second prize and P3,000 – third prize.

The Philippine Postal Corporation (PHLPost) has announced the winner who will represent the Philippines in this year’s 45th International Letter Writing Competition organized by the Universal Postal Union in Berne, Switzerland.

The winning letter of Joel Andrew V. Mallari, a student at the Philippine Science High School, Central Luzon Campus in Pampanga top the almost 1,000 entries sent all over the country for the Letter Writing Contest organized by PHLPost in the national level.

He will also received P20,000 cash prize, a certificate of recognition and presentation stamps frame from PHLPost. Mallari’s winning school will also get P10,000.

The Philippine Postal Corporation (PHLPost) has extended until March 31, 2016 the submission of entries of student’s age’s 15-years old and below to the 45th International Letter Writing Competition for Young People to select the country’s official entry to the international competition organized by the Universal Postal Union.

The nationwide letter writing contest will focus on the theme” “Write a letter to your 45 year old self”.

Entries for the national competition must be recent and original letters written in English according to the theme of the competition. It must not exceed the limit of 1000 words in length. The composition must contain the elements of a letter, place and date, addressee’s address, opening and closing salutation and signature.

On a separate sheet of paper, the participant must indicate the following information: Number of words of the letter, complete name and address, Gender of Candidate, Age and /or Date of Birth, Colored 2×2 Photo, Name and Address of School/Grade or Year Level and Contact Numbers (Telephone/Cellphone Number).

The first prize winner will receive P20,000.00 cash; second prize- P15,000.00 and third prize- P10,000.00. All winners will also be awarded medals, plaques and albums of Philippine stamps. The top three winning school will also received cash prizes and a plaque from PHLPost.

The criteria for judging are structure as a letter -20%; adherence to the theme- 30%; creativity -30%; and Use of language-20%.

The Philippine Postal Corporation (PHLPost) invites students 15-years old and below to join the 45th Universal Postal Union (UPU) International Letter Writing Competition for Young People.

To select the country’s official entry to the international competition, PHLPost has organized a nationwide letter writing contest inviting young people to focus on the theme” “Write a letter to your 45 year old self”. Children around the world are encouraged to take a flight - into their imagination, while writing a letter to themselves in the future. The competition also coincides with the 45th edition of the international contest.

The national winner will be sent by PHLPost as the Philippines’ official entry in the worldwide letter writing contest organized by the UPU International Bureau. The top winner will receive a gold medal and a certificate, as well as other prizes to commemorate their win. PRESS RELEASE: PHLPost Honors Letter Writing Advocates

As part of its fervent goal to promote the art of letter writing to the Filipino society, PHLPost recognizes the three of the award winning TV/radio shows for inspiring the public to express their ideas and stories through letters.

Postmaster General Josie dela Cruz revealed the three awardees, also dubbed as the Letter Writing Advocates: TV series Maalaala Mo Kaya, public affairs program Wish Ko Lang, and radio program Dr. Love.

“I believe that the invaluable contribution of our Letter Writing Advocates has inspired many Filipinos, especially the youth to engage more in letter writing activities that will not just communicate but also touch lives.” dela Cruz said.

The three awardees were chosen for supporting the art of letter writing by engaging its audience to tell their stories through letters and mailing it to their program.

Maalaala Mo Kaya is the country’s longest running drama anthology which showcases the real-life stories of viewers or celebrities through letter sending.

Meanwhile, Wish Ko Lang is the first wish-granting show on Philippine television, where wishes are sent through letters to the program, and the chosen ones are granted by the show.

On the other hand, Dr. Love Radio show is a counseling program where letter senders seek advice about their relationships with family and loved ones and receive enlightenment and guidance from the host.

This is the first time that PHLPost recognize the Letter Writing Advocates.

 Aside from them, PHLPost also honors its partners during the National Letter Writing Day Celebration which includes the Department of Education (DepEd), Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino (KWF), and SM Supermalls.

By awarding the so called Letter Writing Advocates and Partners, dela Cruz hopes that it will boost PHLPost’s campaign to revive the art of letter writing, an act that offers a unique kind of experience that cannot be achieved by the modern technology.

PRESS RELEASE: PHLPost to hold Dear Next President letter writing activity nationwide

October 6, 2015 Following the announcement of three Presidential candidates for the May 2016 national election, the Philippine Postal Corporation (PHLPost) will hold a nationwide letter-writing campaign focusing on the theme “Dear Next President”- to be participated by about 50,000 students in celebration of the “World Post Day” on October 09 at selected SM Supermall branches all over the country.

World Post Day is celebrated every 9th of October annually, to coincide with the anniversary of the establishment of the Universal Postal Union (UPU) in 1874 in the Swiss capital of Berne. Its main purpose is to create awareness of the role of the postal sector in people’s and businesses’ everyday lives and its contribution to the social and economic development of countries.

PHLPost's primary activity to celebrate this day is the National letterwriting Day (NLWD) with the theme "Dear Next President", which is expected to provide a venue for the Filipino youth to express themselves by engaging in letter writing activities that will not just communicate but touch lives. 

"With the 2016 election fast shaping up, we would like to encourage the youth, though they are not yet eligible to participate in the electoral process, to express his or her thoughts and hopes for the next president of the country through a letter," Postmaster General Josie Dela Cruz said.

PHLPost will compile all the letters and hopefully, will be able to present this to the next elected president of the Philippines.
Together with thousands of participating youth, the corporation further hopes that the president will take time to look and consider the ideals and recommendations embodied in their letters.

The 3rd National Letter-writing Day will be undertaken in partnership with SM Supermalls, Department of Education and Komisyon ng Wikang Filipino.

Aside from the simultaneous letterwriting activity, PHLPost will also open the “Power of Letter Exhibit” at SM North in Quezon City, a showcase of different letters from known personalities from the government, media, the academe, and entertainment.

Being in the forefront of the advocacy to revive the art of letterwriting with its program, Sulat Mulat Postal Awareness Caravan, PHLPost officials continue to believe that nothing else cultivates romance, nurtures friendship, or helps one stay connected like a hand-written card or letter received at the post office.
