Red Cross slogan

This slogan cancel for the second annual fund campaign of the Philippine National Red Cross was used in Manila from February 15 to March 15, 1949.

80 years ago today

This was mailed exactly 80 years ago today.

Davao at that time was only one province. It was divided into three provinces in 1967 and Baganga was made part of Davao Oriental.

Cost of mailing at that time: 2 centavos!

Oro Philatelic Club 2nd exhibit

This slogan cancellation for the 2nd Philatelic Exhibition of the Oro Philatelic Club held at Ateneo de Cagayan from December 8 to 9, 1956, was used only in Cagayan de Oro City.

Ateneo de Cagayan now is more popularly known by its university name, Xavier University. The name change happened in 1958.

new issue bulletins back then

Can you imagine postal workers banging away at a typewriter to make new issue bulletins?

I've always wondered how the Stamp and Philatelic Division produced these bulletins on aerogrammes.

This particular one announces the issuance of the UST stamp set in 1956, the first Philippine issue to be printed in Switzerland.

An official publication of The United Postal Stationery Society is The Postal Stationery of the Philippines United States Administration 1898-1946  (note the doubling of "OF" in the cover title).

Copyright year is 1983.

A note states that "Much of the update information in this catalog was compiled by Eugene A. Garrett during the years 1977-78." Gene is, of course, well known in Philippine philately.

It has information on knives, envelope and card stock, weathering, shades of ink, quantities, and corner cards, among others.

The contents include envelopes, wrappers, postal cards and reply cards.
