PRESS RELEASE: PHLPost releases St. Stephens 100th anniversary commemorative stamps

The Philippine Postal Corporation (PHLPost) released postage stamps on June 21 to commemorate St. Stephen’s High School’s (SSHS) 100th founding Anniversary.

SSHS is the first Christian Chinese academic institution in Luzon. In July of 1917, the leaders of the church that was headed by Bishop Charles Henry Brent under the American Episcopal Mission decided to open a school that will admit girls as most schools only afforded education to boys back in the day.

St. Stephen’s Girls’ School, as it was originally called, started in Reina Regente St. with just 19 enrollees. Its first commencement exercises were held in 1922.

Over the years, St. Stephen’s enrollees grew in numbers and they had to relocate to a lot beside St. Luke’s Hospital in Magdalena St., now known as Masangkay. In 1941, a new library, classrooms and a dormitory were completed in the new building.

However, their flourish was halted in the rise of World War II. The new building was ruined, and most American educators were held prisoners in the University of Sto. Tomas.

With St. Stephen’s dedication to spread the Christian faith through education, they reopened in 1946. There were 500 students who returned, along with former teachers and other employees. All of them, through the efforts of Huang Ong Bi Gim, helped in the healing and reconstruction of the school.

In 1949, in order to remove the stigma on boys studying in a girls’ school, the school was officially renamed to St. Stephen’s High School. It was in 1963 when the new five-story building with 1,100-seat auditorium was completed.

Today, SSHS is known for being awarded the Highest Level Accreditation Status from the Federation of Accrediting Agencies of the Philippines, through the Association of Christian Schools, Colleges and Universities Accrediting Agency, Inc.
The commemorative stamps have two designs—the first one featuring SSHS building, the official logo on the upper left corner, the centennial anniversary logo on the lower right corner, Chinese characters that mean “St. Stephen’s High School 100 Years Anniversary” on the extreme left and the centennial anniversary celebration theme “100 Years of God’s Faithfulness” at the bottom; and the second one featuring St. Stephen’s Elementary School building, the official logo on the upper right corner, the centennial anniversary logo on the lower left corner, Chinese characters that mean “St. Stephen’s High School 100 Years Anniversary” on the extreme right and the centennial anniversary celebration theme “100 Years of God’s Faithfulness” at the bottom.

PHLPost has commissioned Amstar Company Inc. to print 101,000 copies (50,500 se-tenant pairs) of the commemorative stamps, to be sold at P12 each. The stamps were designed by PhlPost layout artist Rodine Teodoro, in coordination with Reynaldo de Jesus of St. Stephen.

The stamps and official first day cover are now available at the Post Shop, Central Post Office, Window 04, Liwasang Bonifacio, Manila and area post offices nationwide. For inquiries, please call 527-01-08 or 527-01-32.

PRESS RELEASE: PHLPost releases joint commemorative stamps to mark PHL-France 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations

The Philippine Postal Corporation (PHLPost) releases new joint special stamps featuring paintings of Filipino artist Macario Vitalis and French painter Jacques Villon to commemorate the 70th Anniversary of Philippines-France Diplomatic relations.
“PHLPost is proud to present paintings of great Filipino artist Macario Vitalis and French painter Jacques Villon presented in miniature form or postage stamps which signifies common engagement, through friendship, and historical ties of both countries known throughout the world”, Postmaster General Joel Otarra said.
Macario Cruz Vitalis (1898-1990) a Filipino Modernist painter influenced by French Post-Impressionism. Born in 1898 in a small town in Lapog, Ilocos Sur, he was a teenager when he left the Philippines and moved to the United States of America in 1917, where he attended an art school in San Francisco. He left the United States for France in 1927 where he studied in the Academie de Montmarte and set up his studio in the Paris suburb of Puteaux.

In 1975 he was declared “the only honorary citizen” of Ple’stin-les-Gre’ves, Britanny, where he had originally settled. In 1984 he was honored with the Medal of Excellence from the Institute Academique de Paris.
Jacques Villon (1875-1963) was a French cubist painter and printmaker. Born Emile Mery Frederic Gaston Duchamp in Damville, Eure, in Normandy, France, he came from a prosperous and artistically-inclined family. To distinguish himself from his siblings, he adopted the pseudonym of Jacques Villon as a tribute to the French medieval poet Francois Villon. He lost interest in the pursuit of a legal career and for the next ten years he worked in graphic media, contributing cartoons and illustrations to the Parisian newspapers.
Diplomatic relations between the Philippines and France was established on 26 June 1947 with the signing of a Treaty of Friendship in Paris by then Philippine Vice-President Elpidio Quirino and then French Foreign Minister Georges Bidault. With both countries reeling from wounds of World war II, the Philippines was granted its independence by the United States of America on July 4,1947 and French Republic was restored with the Liberation of Paris on 25 August 1944.

Designed by in-house artist Rodine Teodoro, PHLPost has printed 110,000 copies of the P12.00 and P55.00 denomination of the said commemorative stamps.

young letter writer

PRESS RELEASE: PHLPost young letter writer competes in Switzerland

The Philippine Postal Corporation (PHLPost) has announced the winner who will represent the Philippines in this year’s 46th International Letter Writing Competition organized by the Universal Postal Union (UPU) in Berne, Switzerland.
Giselle Coron, Communication and Events Programme Director of the International Bureau of the UPU formally accepted the entry of Clarence Christian Chua, a 13 years old student at the Grace Christian College, Quezon City.
Mr. Chua bested 71 other young letter writers all over the country in a local contest organized by PHLPost nationwide to select the best entry to the international competition. Chua received P5,000 and a certificate of recognition, while his school received a PHLPost Philatelic Presentation frame.
This year’s nationwide contest focuses on the international theme: “Imagine you are an advisor to the new UN Secretary-General; which issue would you help him tackle first and how would you advise him to solve it?"
In his opening letter, Mr. Chua said, “I used to hear these words from my mother “Finish your food.“ Out of curiosity, he asked, why”” his mother replied, “Because there are street children out there who have nothing to eat. “ He obediently finished his food, not sparing a grain of rice on the plate. From that day on, He realized the reality of a hungry world and the growing problem of food insecurity in our world today.”
An estimated 1.5 million young people all over the world are expected to participate in this year’s international contest.
The competition was created by the UPU in 1969 Tokyo Congress and officially launched in 1971. The Universal Postal Union, in which the Philippines is an active member, establishes a theme annually, with participating countries choosing an entry for the UPU international competition.
PHLPost hope that the entry of Chua will surpass the bronze medal that Ashley Nicole Abalos of PAREF-Woodrose School in Muntinlupa City won in the 2014 edition of the International Letter-Writing Competition for Young People also in Switzerland.
