Dr. Jaime Laya

Have you read this Philippine Star article of September 24 about Dr. Jaime Laya?

Excerpts:

"Jimmy was only six or so when his father, a schoolteacher, started him off on stamp collecting.
“'He gave me a handful of used stamps still stuck on envelopes or on parts of envelopes, no doubt a lesson to get me to learn about other countries, geography, zoology and botany, currencies, history, biography and other things that one can learn from stamps. I eventually concentrated on Philippine stamps, but stopped when I could no longer afford to buy the missing items to fill the blanks in my stamp album,'” Jimmy begins.

Some excerpts of the article by Edu Jarque:

"During my time, every kid had a stamp collection. For me, my collection was my initial introduction to other countries. I remember the Vatican and San Marino stamps were among the largest, long before I traveled to these surprisingly geographical small territories...."

"Maxi Sta. Maria, manager of PHLPost’s Business Line Department, and his energetic team in charge of the revitalization of philately – the collection and study of stamps – discussed how it has breathed new life into the industry."

"The Philately section dreams – they have also taken this as a challenge – of eventually erecting a depository, their very own permanent philatelic museum, where they can exhibit the country’s extensive collection of stamps that is a part of our heritage that may be visited for education, fun and a sense of being proudly Filipino."

Some excerpts from the article by Lorraine Lorenzo:

"Enthusiasts like Jorge Cuyugan, the current PSCS president, would head down PHLPost to buy the newest issues from the post office’s stamp shop. He is well known for his collection of Rizaliana stamps, and has actually completed all stamps depicting the national hero from collections dating as early as 1906."

"Dr. Ymerson Tan, another collector and a friend of Cuyugan, has a complete collection of the Queen Isabella II stamps — the first stamps issued when the Philippines opened its own postal service during Spanish times. He would also visit the post office regularly to purchase new issues, and he shared how he would get some of the rarest pieces – like a Year of the Monkey stamp that didn’t have the word ‘Monkey’ in it."

"Josie Cura, president of FSCS, would regularly set up a table at the PHLPost lobby, where they would sell old and rare stamps, as well as an indexed calendar of stamp issues for serious and beginning collectors."

"Rodin Teodoro, a stamp designer with over 30 designs under his wing, shares the importance of stamps in our culture. 'When I design, I try to keep it simple but classy because stamps are a way of showing the the world our history and culture.'"

Have I Told You Philately

Have you read this feature published last Sunday by Manila Bulletin?

Some excerpts from the article by Alexa H. Bacay:

"One of the active stamp collecting clubs in the Philippines is the Cebu Stamp Club, Inc. (CSCI). Founded by Richard Allan B. Uy in 1996, it now has 461 members worldwide and is still encouraging other stamp collectors to join the club."

"Uy himself started out as a young philatelist. He shares that when he was in his teens, he opened a steel cabinet that was full of letters and envelopes with stamps from China and Taiwan. His grandfather being in the import/export business had regular correspondence with these countries, thus the many stamps that got Uy into the hobby of collecting. Soon he found himself exchanging doubles with his friends who shared the same interest."

"Meanwhile, Uy dreams to have the Cebu Stamp Club on a stamp someday. He shares that they were responsible for the concept of the Tres de Abril stamp, where they collaborated with the Cebu City government through the Cultural and Historical Affairs Commission and the Stamp Advisory Committee of PHILpost. The stamps bore the artwork of a Cebuano artist, and were released on June 12, 1998, as part of a set."
