PRESS RELEASE: Business as usual for postal service in Mindanao

The Philippine Postal Corporation (PHLPost) post office branches in Mindanao are business as usual despite President Duterte’s declaration of martial law in Mindanao due to attacks carried out by the Maute group in Marawi City.

PHLPost will continue to provide acceptance and mail delivery and will observe normal operations except in Marawi City where Military operations are still ongoing.

“We are committed to bring regular postal services in Mindanao to serve PHLPost clients and the general public,” Postmaster General Joel Otarra said.

Post Office in Marawi City remained closed due to ongoing military operations. Mail processing and delivery services for the areas of Marawi are being catered at Iligan City post office.

Otarra has instructed regional area directors in Mindanao to make sure that postal services will be provided most especially to evacuees who are temporary sheltered in Iligan City and nearby areas.

President Duterte has issued Proclamation No. 216 “Declaring a State of Martial Law and Suspending the Privilege of Writ of Habeas Corpus in the Whole of Mindanao.”

Marahui

A duplex cancel of Camp Marahui in the then Moro Province, Philippine Islands.

Marahui must be the old spelling of Marawi.

The Camp Marahui post office was opened in 1904 and closed in 1905.

Looks like this stamp on piece was cancelled on the last day of the post office! 

80 years ago today

This was mailed exactly 80 years ago today.

Davao at that time was only one province. It was divided into three provinces in 1967 and Baganga was made part of Davao Oriental.

Cost of mailing at that time: 2 centavos!

Jap Occ cover

This commercially used Japanese Occupation cover was mailed from Dulawan, Cotabato, on July 22, 1943 (date is in manuscript), and addressed to Zamboanga City, a few weeks after the Japanese Military ceased using censor marks.

The backstamp is indistinct but "Zamboanga" and "AUG 19" can still be made out.

Is the post office of the Municipality of Dulawan among those open during this time, as listed in Eugene Garrett's definitive work Postal History of the Japanese Occupation of the Philippines?

PRESS RELEASE: Business as usual, PHLPost Metro Manila Offices open in November 17 and 20

Need to send your letter or package, or expecting a mail during the long holiday this week? Worry no more as PHLPost Postal Offices in Metro Manila will be open on November 17 and 20, the two non-working days declared by the government in view of Philippines' hosting of APEC Summit.

Postmaster General Josie dela Cruz announced that operations of all post offices in Metro Manila will continue on November 17 (Tuesday) and November 20 (Friday), part of the four non-working days declared in Memorandum Circular 84 by Malacanang.

Dela Cruz added that post offices in NCR are "business as usual" on Tuesday and Friday, and all of the frontline postal workers and letter carriers are ready to serve those who will be sending and expecting mails and parcels.

PHLpost services include ordinary and registered mails , domestic and international express mails/pouch, parcel delivery, postal money order (paper-based and electronic), and bills payment.

Postal Offices will be open from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

Cotabato PO reopening

This cover was described in an auction held some 15 years ago as marking the reopening of Cotabato post office on August 13, 1945, with "wavy lines cancel plus m/s name and date, censored in Davao and signed by postmaster."

Cotabato is quite a distance from Davao.
