The Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) is commemorating 100 years of cinema in the Philippines on 12 September 2019 through “Sine Sandaan: Celebrating the Luminaries of Philippine Cinema” as well as the issuance of commemorative stamps by the Philippine Postal Corporation (PHLPost) entitled “SANDAAN - Celebrating 100 Years of Philippine Cinema”.
PHLPost is releasing stamps, souvenir sheets, and official first-day covers for this monumental celebration. Featured on the stamp is the logo of SANDAAN appearing on a stylized movie ticket, highlighting the dates 1919-2019. The souvenir sheet presents acclaimed director and producer Jose Nepomuceno, considered by many as the “Father of Philippine Movies”. His film Dalagang Bukid was the first Filipino-produced silent film, starring Atang de la Rama and Marcellano Ilagan. Dalagang Bukid was released on 12 September 1919.
The FDCP will lead the year-long celebration of the Centennial Year of Philippine Cinema, which begins on 12 September 2019 and will culminate on 11 September 2020, per Presidential Proclamation No. 622 Series of 2018.
Stamps and Official First Day Covers of “100 Years of Philippine Cinema” will be available at the Philatelic Counter, Manila Central Post Office, all Mega Manila Post Offices, Postal Area 4, San Pablo, Postal Area 5, Mandaue, Postal Area 7, Davao, and Postal Area 8, Cagayan de Oro.
