PRESS RELEASE: PHLPost releases commemorative stamp to mark University of the Visayas 100th Anniversary

The Philippine Postal Corporation (PHLPost) launched a new commemorative stamps featuring the 100th Founding Anniversary of the University of the Visayas (UV) last January 12.
The University of the Visayas (UV) was founded in 1919 by the late Don Vicente Gullas which aim to provide young people from average-income families the opportunity to acquire high school and tertiary education.
It was formerly known as the Visayan Institute having 37 high school students only on its first year of operation then turned 87 on the following enrollment year.
The school does not have its own building and so they rented spaces until in year 1935 when Don Juan Rivera (father-in-law of Gullas) purchased a lot of YMCA and its building also in 1936. After the war in 1945, the school resumed its classes and later transferred to its current site.
Then in 1948 it was granted a University status.
“Education indeed is never just about preparation for future work. While we would look forward to our students excelling in their chosen vocation, we also value the development of the potentials of the individuals and the enhancement of personal quality.” PHLPost Postmaster General Otarra said during the stamp launching at the UV.
PMG Otarra also shared PHLPost’s partnership with the Department of Education (DepEd) and other educational institutions to promote positive values through “Salamat Po” letter writing activities.
PHLPost has printed 50, 000 copies of the UV commemorative stamp sold for P12.00 each.
The stamps and official first day covers are now available at the Philatelic Counter, Central Post Office, Liwasang Bonifacio 1000, Manila and area post offices nationwide. For inquiries, please call 527-01-08 or 527-01-32.
