DAVPEX '83 souvenir cards

These were the DAVPEX '83 souvenir cards, printed on one side and cancelled on the other, in blue and green.

I believe 1,000 of each color were printed, but I don't know how many were cancelled with a stamp.

PRESS RELEASE: PHLPost introduces cartoon-style sticker stamps

For the first time, the Philippine Postal Corporation (PHLPost) has released a new set of four (4) special limited edition of stamps which uses stick-on self adhesive (sticker) technology featuring different cartoon-style characters that brings to life stamp collectors of all ages.

These cartoon-style sticker stamps is being featured by PHLPost to celebrate the National Stamp Collecting Month this November by virtue of Presidential Proclamation Number 494 signed by former President Fidel V. Ramos, declaring the month of November as National Stamp Collecting Month (NSCM).

“We are proud to see these colorful images comes to life with the special limited edition of stick-on self adhesive stamps PHLPost released for the first time, to connect one another through the posts”, Postmaster General Josie Dela Cruz said.

PHLPost creative artist Rodine Teodoro designed the stamp, featuring collectors young and old, in cartoon-style characters engaged in the hobby of stamp collecting.

About 30,000 sheets of four (4) different designs of the stamps, sold at P15 each were printed by security printer Amstar Company, Inc. measuring 150X50mm for every sheetlet.

Collecting stamps are a favorite and exciting pastime of people who are interested in history, geography, sports, art and world cultures.

Aside from the sticker stamps, PHLPost has introduced several postal innovations in the production of stamps such as the glow in the dark, scented, gold foiled, 3D embossed, personalized, laminated varnish and tactile printing technology.

The stamps, souvenir sheets and official first day cover are now available at the Post Shop, Central Post Office, Door 203, Liwasang Bonifacio, Manila and area post offices nationwide. For inquiries, please call 527-01-08 or 527-01-32.

PRESS RELEASE: PHLPost releases Philipppine Wildlife stamps

The Philippine Postal Corporation (PHLPost) has released new set of stamps focusing on some of the endemic Philippine Wildlife animals which are vulnerable from extinction.

Featured are four (4) Philippine wildlife species of stamps positioned in vertical format, and in unique colorful designs are: Philippine Flower Pecker, Philippine Sail-Fin Lizard, Philippine Pangolin and Freshwater Purple Crab.

Philippine Flower Pecker is common in Western Visayas area. The Philippine Sail-Fin Lizard is endemic to the Philippines, where it lives near rivers in tropical forests. Philippine Pangolin and Freshwater Purple Crab are both endemic in Palawan province.

In recent years, however, these animals are threatened by ongoing habitat loss and degradation, and commonly subjected to hunting.

“PHLPost supports the education and information campaign of the government and the private sector in preserving and protecting our country’s wild species of animals who are at risk of extinction”, Postmaster General Josie Dela Cruz said.

The Philippines is considered as one of the mega-diverse country in the world. Its more than 7,100 islands have many endemic species of plants, birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, freshwater, and invertebrates.

About 30,000 sheets of four (4) different designs sold at P15 each were printed by security printer Amstar Company, Inc., measuring 2.362inches X 5.117inches for every sheetlet.

PHLPost creative artist Rodine Teodoro designed the new stamps, which was printed by Amstar Company, Inc.

DAVPEX '83 show covers

Here's the DAVPEX '83 show cover.

There's a couple of interesting details about this:

1. The canceller from the post office states "Davao Philatelic Club" although the club's name was "Davao Stamp Collectors". Not long after, however, the club did change its name to Davao Philatelic Club!

2. The name of the exhibition is misspelled on the cachet: DAVAPHEX instead of DAVPEX. I believe the printed envelopes came from the Manila post office as there's a similarly-designed cachet for LASALLEPHEX held some 10 days earlier in Bacolod City.

The stamps are denominated 40-sentimo, the postal rate for domestic mail at that time.

Stamp Clubs News

Early 1982 saw the birth of a new club publication, IPPS NEWS, of the International Philippine Philatelic Society....According to Compiler/Editor Linda Stanfield, this mimeographed quarterly does not replace the club's Philippine Philatelic News, the highly respected publication for studies and researches on all periods and aspects of Philippine philately.
     The IPPS NEWS is the brainchild of the club's President, Eugene A. Garrett....It will become "a venue for discussing club activities, for club news, for questions and answers, etc...." The 10 pages of the maiden issue certainly do all these and more. Its front page carries a facsimile of a cacheted cover for the Concert at the Park 200 issue -- with an actual stamp and first day cancellation!
     To all IPPS members all over the world, the new club publication is certainly a welcome treat. In the words of Ms. Stanfield, "This is going to be our medium of keeping in touch with one another and opening a line of communications among ourselves."

A new stamp club, the Davao Stamp Collectors, was formally organized on Feb. 14 with 20 members attending its organizational meeting. Elected officers of the DSC are Atty. Virginia H. Europa, President; Mrs. Fe Geonson, Secretary; Miss Jojie Antonio, Treasurer; and Dr. Cesar Somoso, PRO. Atty. Rodolfo Sarenas, former mayor of Davao City (1944-45) [he was the mayor from 1953-54; Juan Sarenas was mayor from 1943-44 --O.], is the Club Adviser.
     Regular club meetings will be held on the first Sunday of every quarter with committee meetings, get-togethers and conferences in-between. Temporary DSC headquarters is the EDI Law Office with Ms. Alma Grado as acting Office Manager. The club President may be contacted at the City Court....
     Davao Stamp Collectors is inviting all stamp collectors in the area to join its membership rolls.

The Board of Directors of the Philippine Philatelic Auction Club has elected its set of Officers for 1982: President, Don Carlos Inductivo; Vice President, Ms. Naty G. Lozano; Secretary, Ms. Josefina T. Cura; Treasurer, Mr. Felipe Liao. The club's headquarters remain at Rm. 223, Madrigal Bldg., Escolta, Manila.

March 12 saw the organization of the Bacolod City Philatelic Club. Its Officers are Mr. Jun Pefianco...,President; Ms. Suzette Muñozca, Vice President; Ms. Cloty L. Alcala, Secretary; Mrs. Carmela Namin, Treasurer; Dra. Fe Montinola, PRO. Facilitator in the organization of the club was Ms. Naty G. Lozano, VP of the Philippine Philatelic Auction Club who was in Bacolod for the La Salle Stamp Exhibit and for holidays with relatives and friends.
     Some 20 members attended the organizational meeting of the BCPC and a second meeting was scheduled for the end of the month. All stamp collectors in Bacolod and the rest of Negros Occidental are encouraged to join the club.

The Grade School Stamp Club of La Salle College, Bacolod City, held a very successful competitive stamp exhibition in the school library last March 4-5. The affair was graced by the presence of Postmaster General J. Roilo Golez, Stamp and Philatelic Section Chief Ben Moncayo, Stamp Designer Antonio Chuidian and Mrs. Adelina Argente, senior officer of the Stamp and Philatelic Section.
     According to Bro. Jaime Dalumpines, FSC, exhibition coordinator, the Bureau of Posts and some Manila philatelists also sent over some materials for exhibition. The affair was given much publicity on TV and radio all over the province.

Over at Alabang in south Metro-Manila, the Philatelic Club of the de la Salle Zobel School also held a Philatelic Exhibition at the school auditorium from March 3 to 5. The grade school affair had formal ribbon-cutting ceremonies attended by school officials led by Bro. Raymond Bronowics, FSC, Director.
     President of the school's stamp club is Maximilian Fernandez. Moderators are Miss Gloria Pante and Mrs. Antonita Jose.

Yes, I was a member of Philippine Stamp Collectors, a stamp club "for stamp collectors who cannot attend club meetings but want to enjoy all the benefits of a stamp club."

By the first year of its existence (January 1981-January 1982), there were 108 members listed in the club's roster, 52 from Metro Manila, 53 from the provinces and 3 from abroad.

It was originally called Philippine Stamp Club, and the name change was "due to registration requirements."

Members were given a personal membership card, the PSC Newsletter and a free subscription to Hobby Time. We could also avail of any of the following benefits at the outset: "RP new issue and FDC services" with a 10% fee over the cost, "Bargain Counter" of stamps by mail, "Exchange Center" for duplicates, and a "Question & Answer Service" for queries about philately. Approvals were added later.

Founder/Adviser was Linda Stanfield, President was Amando H. Labayen Jr., and Secretary was Fe A. Carandang. Among the members were Rogelio de Jesus ("the dean of Filipino stamp dealers") and Severino N. Luna (founder of the Philippine Philatelic Auction Club).

Not long after its first year the PSC folded.
