PRESS RELEASE: PHLPost celebrates Flower Festival in Baguio City

In celebration of Baguio City’s prominent Panagbenga Festival, also known as the Flower Festival, the Philippine Postal Corporation (PHLPost) is holding a two-day stamp exhibit at the Baguio City Central Post Office on February 24 to 25, featuring various stamps of flowers issued by the PHLPost through the years.

From the March 9, 1962-issued Philippine Orchids stamp to the most recent September 30, 2016-issued Philippine Orchids stamp, the exhibit displays 45 flower stamps.

Among the featured stamps are six versions of Philippine Orchids stamps issued on different dates, 11 derivatives of Philippine Native Orchids stamps, five versions of Philippine Flowers Mini-Stamps, Cacti and Succulents stamps, Rare Philippine Flowers, Philippine Hoyas, Aquatic Flowers, Philippine Cultivated Mussaendas, Revalued Narra Tree, Flowers of the Philippines, and Philippine Heritage Month-Hybrid Gumamelas stamps.

Stamps commemorating several conventions and celebrating diplomatic relationships between the Philippines and other countries that feature flowers are also found in the exhibit, namely, the 29th Orient and Southeast Asian Lions Forum, Taipei ’93 Asian International Invitational Stamp Exhibition, Cattleyas-Taipei ’96, 50 Years of Philippine-Thailand Diplomatic Relations, 50 Years of Philippine-Korean Diplomatic Relations, Hong Kong 2001 Stamp Exhibition, and Golden Jubilee of the Philippine-Chinese Philatelic Society (PCPS).

The stamp featuring the Philippine Flag with National Symbols-Sampaguita is also included in the exhibit, so as the stamps of Paintings of Young Filipino Artists and Fiestas in the Philippines, which have flowers in their designs.

Cory Aquino Floral Paintings scented stamps for Cory Aquino’s fifth and sixth death anniversaries are also to be seen in the exhibit.

first sports topical

The first Philippine stamps to feature a sports topical was the set of three issued in 1934 for the 10th Far Eastern Championship Games.

For the 2c value, baseball is shown. This, also, is the first Philippine "baseball on stamp" and the first "baseball on stamp" in the world (beating that of the United States issue which came out for the centennial of baseball in 1939).

The 6c value features a tennis player. This is the first Philippine "tennis on stamp". Look at the outfit!

And the 16c value shows two basketball players (to me they look more like volleyball players!) and this is the first Philippine "basketball on stamps" as well as reportedly the first "basketball on stamps" in the world.

first pictorials

Issued in1932, this set, known as the first pictorials, features Mayon Volcano, the Manila Post Office, Pier No. 7, Rice Planting, Rice Terraces, the Baguio Zigzag, and "Pagsanjan Falls" (which I posted earlier).

These also were the first Philippine stamps to depict pineapples, part of the Manila Bay, ships, the carabao, and farmers.

Davao scouting cover

Here's one more Scouting cover: the stamp was issued for the 1977 National Jamboree of the Boy Scouts, which was held from December 28, 1977 to January 5, 1978 at three places (Isabela, Cebu and Davao -- I was there in Davao with my fellow grade school Scouts), and a handstamp for the "First National BSP Little League Baseball Championship" that I presume was also held in Davao City from April 11 to 15, 1978.

Scout Limbaga

Probably made by or for a collector of Scouts on stamps, the connection here is that Scout Limbaga is in Pasonanca Park, Zamboanga City, which is the subject of the stamp issued for the Philippine Tourism Series of the 1970s.

Romulo scouting

Carlos P. Romulo, honored on the stamp for his 80th birth anniversary and as "Mr. United Nations", was one of the seven charter members, not of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, but of the Boy Scouts of the Philippines, which was created on October 31, 1936, by Commonwealth President Manuel L. Quezon.

PRESS RELEASE: PHLPost releases Philipppine Wildlife stamps

The Philippine Postal Corporation (PHLPost) has released new set of stamps focusing on some of the endemic Philippine Wildlife animals which are vulnerable from extinction.

Featured are four (4) Philippine wildlife species of stamps positioned in vertical format, and in unique colorful designs are: Philippine Flower Pecker, Philippine Sail-Fin Lizard, Philippine Pangolin and Freshwater Purple Crab.

Philippine Flower Pecker is common in Western Visayas area. The Philippine Sail-Fin Lizard is endemic to the Philippines, where it lives near rivers in tropical forests. Philippine Pangolin and Freshwater Purple Crab are both endemic in Palawan province.

In recent years, however, these animals are threatened by ongoing habitat loss and degradation, and commonly subjected to hunting.

“PHLPost supports the education and information campaign of the government and the private sector in preserving and protecting our country’s wild species of animals who are at risk of extinction”, Postmaster General Josie Dela Cruz said.

The Philippines is considered as one of the mega-diverse country in the world. Its more than 7,100 islands have many endemic species of plants, birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, freshwater, and invertebrates.

About 30,000 sheets of four (4) different designs sold at P15 each were printed by security printer Amstar Company, Inc., measuring 2.362inches X 5.117inches for every sheetlet.

PHLPost creative artist Rodine Teodoro designed the new stamps, which was printed by Amstar Company, Inc.

The stamps and official first day cover are now available at the Post Shop, Central Post Office, Door 203, Liwasang Bonifacio, Manila and area post offices nationwide. For inquiries, please call 527-01-08 or 527-01-32.
