1950: AFF 50th anniversary

For the 25th anniversary of Asociacion Filatelica de Filipinas, a set of three stamps and a souvenir sheet were issued on May 22, 1950 featuring American philatelic president Franklin D. Roosevelt (1882-1945) examining his stamp collection. FDR was an honorary member of AFF.

1950: Bureau of Forestry

Red lauan is featured on a two-stamp set issued on April 14, 1950 for the 50th anniversary of the Bureau of Forestry.

The red lauan is a tree endemic to the Philippines. "Red" comes from the reddish tinge of the bark.

1950: Junior Chamber International

The first issue for 1950 was a set of five stamps marking the 5th World Congress of the Junior Chamber International held at Manila from March 1 to 8, 1950. These Jaycees stamps were released on two dates: March 1 for the airmails, and March 3 for the three lower values.

1949: Gen. Gregorio del Pilar

A set of two stamps commemorated the 50th death anniversary of Gregorio del Pilar on December 2, 1949. It depicts the general astride a horse at the Battle of Tirad Pass (December 2, 1899) where he was killed.

1949: UPU 75th Anniversary

On October 9, 1949 the 75th anniversary of the Universal Postal Union was commemorated with a set of three stamps and a souvenir sheet. Pictured is the UPU Monument in Berne, Switzerland. Philippines entered the UPU on January 1, 1922.

Imperforate copies come from the souvenir sheet, which the post office allowed for use in mail beginning on August 31, 1960. The 6c and 4c are usually in pairs. Reportedly 915,000 souvenir sheets were cut up.

The quantity printed for the souvenir sheet was further reduced by an unofficial overprint in 1960 reading "President D.D. Eisenhower visit to the Philippines June 14-16,1960", and another overprinting by the post office in 1963.

1948: FAO Conference

FAO stands for Food and Agriculture Organization and a stamp set was issued on February 3, 1948 for the FAO Conference held at Baguio. Printing is rather crude but the design shows farmers threshing rice using a thresher.

Mint copies today can have dark brown to blackish gum (it was made from cassava).

The 40-centavo value is an airmail stamp.

The first issue for 1948 was a set of three stamps for the "Third Anniversary of Liberation" of Manila.

It portrays Gen. Douglas MacArthur (1880-1964) as "Defender-Liberator". The date of issue was February 3, 1948.

1947: First Anniversary of Republic issue

For the anniversary of the Republic, a three-stamp set was issued on July 4, 1947 showing President Manuel A. Roxas taking the oath of office. Administering the oath was Chief Justice Manuel Moran; also shown are Vice President Elpidio Quirino, First Lady Trinidad de Leon Roxas and U.S. Ambassador Paul McNutt; all of whom are not identified on the stamps. The ceremony was held at Luneta.

1946: 50th Anniversary of Martyrdom of Rizal issue

The only other Republic stamp issued in 1946 was for the 50th anniversary of the Martyrdom of Dr. Jose Rizal on December 30. This was an overprint of a Commonwealth definitive issued earlier in 1946 before the Proclamation of Independence issue.

stamp centenary FDCs

A set of six stamps were issued in 1954 to commemorate the centenary of the Philippine postage stamp.

A modern classic, these stamps (shown here as blocks of four on first day covers) were printed by Thomas de la Rue & Co., Ltd., of London, the first Philippine stamps printed in England.
