PRESS RELEASE: PHLPost to honor iconic Presidential Cars at History con 2018

August 3, 2018   Posted By: Corp.CommClassic and Modern Presidential Cars of the nation’s commander-in-chief comes alive in Philippine Postage Stamps. For the first time in the history of Philippine Stamps, a collection of historic Presidential Cars will be unveiled at History Con 2018, the biggest entertainment convention in the country on August 10 at World Trade Center, CCP Complex, Buendia Pasay City.
The Philippine Postal Corporation (PHLPost) will issue a series of commemorative stamps featuring classic and modern Presidential wheels starting with the country’s first president, Emilio Aguinaldo’s 1924 Packard Single-6 Touring. Aguinaldo’s car was made by Packard Motor Company founded by brothers, James and William Packard with their business partner George Lewis Weiss. The American company started building automobiles in 1899. President Aguinaldo owned the Packard vehicle during his retirement in Cavite.
Following Aguinaldo’s vehicle on the road are nation’s top leaders in the country’s history whose presidential cars were featured in commemorative stamps. These include Commonwealth President Manuel L. Quezon who rode a 1937 Airflow Custom Imperial, model CW limousine as his official car.
During the Japanese invasion, from 1943-1945, President Jose P. Laurel rode a Packard Custom Super Eight: One Eighty Limousine on his presidential sorties.
President Elpidio Quirino rides a 1953 Chrysler Crown Imperial Limousine while President Ramon Magsaysay used a classic 1955 Cadillac Series 75-23.
From these era of classic and stylist cars, modern Presidential cars were also showcased in commemorative stamps ridden by Presidents’ Ferdinand E. Marcos (1980 Lincoln Continental Mark VI Signature Series), Corazon C. Aquino (Mercedes-Benz 500 SEL), Fidel V. Ramos (Mercedes-Benz 500SEL Guard), Joseph Ejercito Estrada (Mercedes-Benz S600) and Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo (Mercedes-Benz S600 Limousine V140).
“In coordination with the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP), we want all Filipinos to appreciate the historical significance of these presidential cars and in the lives of our former head of state through these wonderful pieces of postage stamps”, Postmaster General Joel Otarra said.
PHLPost has printed 8,000 copies of modern and classic presidential cars commemorative stamps in sheetlet form with a denomination of P12 each. The commemorative stamps and its official first day cover will be available starting August 10 at the History Con 2018 PHLPost Pilipinas Philately booth located at World Trade Center Exhibit Hall, CCP Complex, Buendia, Pasay City.
