UPU overprint

The Universal Postal Union was created in 1874 (as General Postal Union -- the name change came four years later), and the Philippines marked its admission to this agency in 1879 by overprinting King Alfonso XII stamps.

There are two types of the overprint. Shown above is the first type (letters in CONVENIO and CORREOS close to each other) and the second one has the letters in CONVENIO and CORREOS slightly far apart. Two stamps of the King Alfonso XII first issue were overprinted: 2 centimos de peso on 25 milesimas de peso, and 8 centimos de peso on 100 milesimas de peso.

Curiously, the inscription FILIPINAS on the base stamp has been obliterated by the overprint!
