The Commission on Higher Education states that "heads of colleges and universities, public and private, are hereby enjoined to foster the organization of philatelic clubs within their institutions and are urged to coordinate with the Philippine Postal Corporation in this regard."

Filatelic Fun

To promote the stamp hobby in general, and Philippine philately in particular, I wrote a newspaper column called Filatelic Fun.

It appeared periodically nearly 300 times, first on the pages of Mindanao Gold Star Daily, published in Cagayan de Oro City, from 2004 to 2010, and then on the pages of Gold Star News, published in Tagum City, in 2011.

Postage Stamps' Digest

This was a subscription form for Postage Stamps' Digest published in La Union.

It says "Payable to MR. JORGE H. CUYUGAN" (of Pampanga fame).

Most likely out of date and no longer valid for the stated price.

PRESS RELEASE: PHLPost issues President Quirino commemorative stamps

The Philippine Postal Corporation (PHLPost) has released new commemorative stamps featuring President ElpidioQuirino's 125th Birth Anniversary to coincide with the celebration of National Teachers’ Month this September.

“The Philippine Postal Corporation (PHLPost) deeply remembers the life, achievements and philanthropic work of the late President Quirino, who also became a teacher before being elected as the highest chief executive in the country, with the issuance of Philippine postage stamps to commemorate his 125th Birth Anniversary”, Postmaster General Josie Dela Cruz said.

A grayscale photo of President ElpidioQuirino was used in the background of the stamps with the word “Pilipinas” at the top.

President ElpidioQuirino, popularly known as the Post-war President and re-builder of the Philippines, was born on November 16, 1890 in Vigan, Ilocos Sur. Aside from being a teacher, he worked as a property clerk at the Manila Police Department, Congressman, Senator, Vice President and President of the Philippines.

Quirino is recognized as the father of the Central Bank of the Philippines, of the Minimum Wage Law and the precursor of SSS.

As an economist he foresaw the growing energy needs of the Philippines by establishing Maria Cristina Hydroelectric Power Plant in Iligan and Ambuklao Dam in Benguet.

He assumed the Presidency in 1948 when President Roxas died in office. A widower, he lost his wife Alicia and children Armando, Norma and Fe during the battle of Manila in 1945.

PHLPost printed 300,000 pieces of the commemorative stamp sold at P15.00 each. The stamps and first day cover issues are now available at the Manila Central Post Office Postshop outlet and post offices nationwide. For inquiries, please call 527-01-08 or 527-01-32.

IPPS News

In 1981 the International Philippine Philatelic Society came out with a newsletter.

Called simply IPPS News, the front page featured an actual stamp with a first day of issue cancel (if it were an envelope it would be just like a first day cover).

This mimeographed newsletter (the front page was printed differently on better quality paper) was compiled and edited by Linda Stanfield.

Reported in this issue was the news of Don Pablo Esperidion's passing. He was "the epitome of what a philatelist should be and he is the undisputed Mr. Philippine Philately."
