Miggins Collection of the Philippines last spring, we are very pleased to be able to present another specialized catalogue of the Philippines and other United States Territories. In addition to further selections from the Miggins Collection, we are offering items from the Stanley Estabrook Collection of Philippines Flight Covers and the Donn Lueck Collection of Philippines Revenues. Aguinaldo telegraph stamps

Telegraph stamps were also issued by Aguinaldo's revolutionary government.

Top stamp has shading around the value, and bottom stamp without shading.

last newspaper stamp

The third and last time Philippines issued a newspaper stamp was during the revolutionary period.

registration stamp

The only time Philippines issued a registration stamp was during the revolutionary period of Philippine philately.

local stamps catalog

Scott's Standard Catalogue of Local Stamps of the United States, China and Philippine Islands was published in 1915 by the Scott Stamp & Coin Co.

With illustrations, it lists stamps "Issued by the Republic under Aguinaldo" for Luzon and Bohol, in the Philippine section.

Palmer

Published serially in The Philatelic Gazette is "The Postal Issues of the Philippines" by Major F. L. Palmer.

The editions were from December 15, 1910, to May 15, 1912.

This dealt with the Spanish issues, Aguinaldo's revolutionary stamps, and the early American period.

In conclusion, "the author desires to say that it is based primarily upon 'The Postage Stamps of the Philippines' (Bartels, Foster, and Palmer, 1904), as added to by the experience and results of the writer both in the United States and while at Manila, during 1905-7."

Note the promotion in Palmer's rank: from captain (as indicated in the 1904 catalog) to major, in the U.S. Army.

early catalog

An early stamp catalog devoted solely to the Philippines is the one published in 1904 titled The Postage Stamps of the Philippines.

As noted on the title page it includes "a List of Telegraph and Revenue Stamps Issued Under Spanish Dominion."

This illustrated work by J. Murray Bartels, F. Apthorp Foster and Captain F. L. Palmer covers the issues of the Spanish era, revolutionary period and early American administration.

There are no prices given but it's still referenced by Philippine collectors today who are into philatelic research.

Harradine handbook

Although dated this Philippine Postage Stamp Handbook, 1854-1982 by Peter W. A. Harradine still is a good reference book.

This detailed list of stamp issues is arranged according to periods in the history of Philippine philately. Quantities for each issue are given, if known, as well as the relative scarcity.

The illustrations, in black and white, are found in plates tucked in between.

Bought my copy by mail in the latter half of the 1990s from a US bookseller.

The Philippine Philatelist is a website packed full with info and images for the Philippine specialist.

Now continued by Dr. Tommy C. Sim of the US, it was started by Mr. Abraham Q. Luspo Jr. of the Philippines who died in 2008. I had dealt with Abe over a decade ago as a bidder in his Manila Auctions and found him to be friendly and pleasant in correspondence.
