Francisco Coching

New Issue alert:

PRESS RELEASE: PHLPost releases Birth Centenary Stamps of National Artist Francisco V. Coching

The Philippine Postal Corporation (PHLPost) released a commemorative stamp featuring the birth centenary (1919-2019) of Francisco V. Coching, National Artist for Visual Arts.
Born on January 29, 1919, National Artist Francisco V. Coching is acknowledged as the Dean of Philippine Illustrators. He was a master storyteller in images and in print. His illustrations and novels were products of happy combination of fertile imagination, a love of storytelling, and fine draftsmanship.
Coching was a part of the golden age of the Filipino comics in the 50’s and 60’s. The source of his imagery can be traced to the Philippine culture from the 19th century to the 1960s. His works reflected the dynamics brought about by the racial and class conflict in Philippine colonial society in the 19th century.
In his characters and storylines, Coching brings to popular consciousness the issues concerning race and identity. He also discussed the concept of the hero, which resonates through the characters in his comics like Dimasalang and El Vibora.
Francisco V. Coching was proclaimed National Artist for Visual Arts in 2014 by former President Benigno Aquino III.
In house graphic artist Victorino Z. Serevo designed the stamps. PHLPost has printed 25,000 copies of the single design P12.00 commemorative stamps.
Stamps and Official First Day Cover are now available at the Philatelic Counter, Manila Central Post Office, Liwasang Bonifacio 1000, Manila and all other Postal Areas of the Philippine Postal Corporation.

Pigcawayan

The year 2004 in this Pigcawayan Post Office cancel extends beyond the circle!
And notice the different positions of the dates on the two cancellations. So, my guess is that this postmark was struck twice, first for the DISPATCHED cancel and then for the date.
Pigcawayan is a municipality in Cotabato (also known as North Cotabato) province.

FSCC auction April 2019

Found this first day cover in a group of Philippine commercial covers I got from today's auction of the Filipinas Stamp Collectors' Club held at Manila.
Scoutpex '79, the 1st Scout Philatelic Exhibition held at Quezon City from July 4 to 14, 1979, was in commemoration of the 25th anniversary of the first national jamboree held at Quezon City in 1954.
Before the sale began, Philippine Philatelic Federation president Rey Ong announced the holding of a stamp exhibit next month on the theme Women Empowerment. Should be interesting what collectors will show!

Some 20 bidders participated and a little less than 530 philatelic and nonphilatelic lots were offered.

Seen during the activity was Philippine Philatelic Journal editor Hans Becker.

APO auction April 2019

Brought home a cover from today's auction of the APO Philatelic Society held at Manila.
The stamps were affixed on the back of the envelope (hence the US backstamps) because the addressee's name and address on the front would have been covered had the sender put them there.

What I like about this cover is that the 1978 Philatelic Week overprint is shifted to the right.

Some 20 bidders participated in the sale offering a little more than 350 philatelic and numismatic lots.

Philippine Philatelic Federation president Rey Ong dropped by to chat with collectors.
