The Philippines and Croatia established diplomatic relations on February 25, 1993. The Philippines recognized Croatia as an independent nation in 1993. The two countries have links between their shipping industries, including port management, investment, and seafarers. 2018 marks the 25th anniversary of the diplomatic relations between the two countries and both are committed to strengthen bilateral relations.
The stamp design featured Fort Santiago in Intramuros, Manila and St. Michael’s Fortress in Šibenik.
Fort Santiago is a citadel fort built by the Spanish conquistador Miguel Lopez de Legaspi for the newly established city of Manila in the Philippines. The defense fortress is part of the walled city of Intramuros, Manila. The fort was named after St. James (Santiago in Spanish), the patron saint of Spain. It is located at the north of Pasig River and served as the premier defense fortress of the Spanish Government during their rule of the country.
St. Michael’s Fortress in the Croatian town of Šibenik is a medieval fort situated on a steep hill above the old historic center of the city. It is named after the oldest church in Šibenik, St. Michael’s church which was located inside its walls. The importance of the fortress is evident not only in its favorable geographical position, but also in numerous archaeological findings, ranging from the Iron Age to 20th century.
